The Case for Specialized Intelligence
Our vision for AI at Oumi.ai
AI is humanity’s greatest invention yet. It has transformed our daily lives. It catalyzes broad advancements across sciences and industries.
The story we lately tell about AI, however, was written by consumer products. With ChatGPT and the like, the idea of an omniscient AI that can do it all has captured our imagination. But it has also led astray enterprise leaders.
In consumer AI scenarios like the ChatGPT app, the inputs are unconstrained. The domains and scenarios are endless; a general purpose AI is the way to go. An AI owned, and operated by someone else is the way to go.
Most enterprise AI scenarios look exactly the opposite. Enterprise AI solutions should thus also look exactly the opposite. For enterprises to succeed, they need to build their strategy on AI that is “built-to-purpose” and “unconditionally owned.”
Built-to-purpose: Enterprises need specialized AI models, not off the shelf. The tasks in enterprise AI scenarios are specific. The inputs and outputs are constrained. The domains are typically different from the general public web. The workflows are high-stakes. To achieve the quality needed to differentiate against competitors or the latency and cost required to scale, performance needs to be optimized. Optimization for a task needs specialization – a model built for everything is optimized for nothing. Custom models optimized for the specific task is the way to go.
Unconditionally owned: Enterprises need to fully own their AI, not rent it. They need to be able to freely innovate to stay ahead – waiting for the next off the shelf model update by the typical model providers, is not a strategy for differentiation, it is a guarantee for mediocrity. Unless enterprises own their own model, they can’t control where and how the AI runs. They cannot control where the sensitive data flows, or when the model quality and latency may change. Upholding the security, privacy, and quality guarantees for their customers is beyond their control. Only if enterprises own their AI, can they be in control and uphold their customers’ trust.
Custom AI that enterprises fully own and control is not just an advantage, it is the only way for them to stay relevant. Enterprises are maturing in their use of GenAI and quickly realizing it. They are acting on it. The wave from rented general purpose intelligence to fully owned specialized intelligence is quickly growing, even when current tools are lacking.
Enterprises need a tool that will make building custom AI dramatically faster and easier than ever before. A tool that will turn this wave into a tsunami. A tool that will empower enterprises to own their AI future.
That’s why we built Oumi.
